Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is greeted by U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Thomas L. Conant, deputy commander, U.S. Pacific Command, prior to addressing more than 200 service members from U.S. Pacific Command May 30, 2013, inside aircraft hangar 19 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. Hagel met with Pacific Command leaders before continuing to Singapore to speak at the Shangri-La Dialogue. As a senator, Hagel co-founded of the Shangri-La Dialogue, which began in 2002. This return visit to the dialogue will be his first as secretary of defense. The annual conference draws defense and security experts from across the Asia-Pacific region.
