On March 21, 2025, Col. Kathryn Sanborn, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District Commander marked the completion of new center gates in the large lock chamber at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Seattle by smashing a bottle of champagne in a nod to nautical tradition. This $17 million project replaced the original gates first installed 107 years ago when the locks were first built. These upgrades will ensure reliable navigation for vessels traveling through the busiest locks in the nation for years to come.
