On June 24, 2025, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Assistant Administrator Eugenio Piñeiro Soler visited the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Seattle. As the busiest locks in the nation, the Chittenden Locks are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District 24/7, 365 days a year. First built in 1917, the Locks are a Seattle landmark and one of the top tourist destinations in the city. Here, Shay Perryman, Natural Resources Manager and USACE Ranger, conducts a tour for NOAA guests and explains the challenges of operating over 100-year-old infrastructure in a thriving maritime community.
