Mauricio Puerto, then a utilitiesman for U.S. Naval Construction Battalions, known as Seabees, runs along a road on the Italian island of Sardinia in 2006. Puerto and a few fellow Seabees ran 173 miles across the island in a relay to raise money for their annual ball. Puerto, now a civilian facilities team lead at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division in California, later began running races even longer than that. (Photo provided by Mauricio Puerto)
