GEIS Surveillance Work from Georgia Featured at ASM Microbe 2025

Dr. Nino Mitaishvili, MS, PhD, Associate Principal Investigator, represented the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Europe–Middle East (WRAIR E-ME) at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Microbe 2025, held in Los Angeles, California, from June 19–23, 2025. This premier international conference brought together thousands of scientists, clinicians, and public health professionals from around the world. Dr. Mitaishvili’s participation focused on showcasing Georgia’s contributions to infectious disease surveillance in a strategically important region, emphasizing the value of integrated, cross-border monitoring systems. “Attending ASM Microbe 2025 allowed us to validate our surveillance approach and identify ways to further align our work with global best practices,” said Dr. Mitaishvili. “This engagement strengthens both the scientific rigor and international visibility of EUCOM’s investments in regional health security.” The conference provided actionable insights for advancing the next phase of the GEIS-supported study. Critically, the event elevated the visibility of Georgia-based efforts on a global platform and reinforced the role of genomic surveillance in the early detection and response to respiratory threats.
Looking ahead, the knowledge and tools gained at ASM Microbe 2025 will directly shape the evolution of respiratory pathogen surveillance across EUCOM partner nations. By integrating these innovations into local systems, the team aims to enhance early warning capabilities, improve operational readiness, and contribute to global health security. Dr. Mitaishvili’s participation not only advanced the scientific mission but also reaffirmed Georgia’s strategic role in supporting Global health priorities and strengthening international cooperation in infectious disease preparedness.
