WRAIR-EME Supports Force Health Protection During Agile Spirit 2025 Through Clinical Surveillance and Vector Surveillance

Georgia hosted the multinational military exercise Agile Spirit 2025 from 25 July to 6 August, marking the twelfth iteration of this large-scale defense training event. Co-led by the Georgian Defence Forces’ Western Command and the U.S. Georgia National Guard, the exercise brought together military personnel from across NATO Allies and partner nations, fostering regional cooperation, enhancing interoperability, and strengthening collective readiness. The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research – Europe Middle East (WRAIR-EME) provided critical infectious disease surveillance support during Agile Spirit 2025 held at Vaziani Military Base. The mission aimed to safeguard Warfighter Force Health Protection (FHP) through timely detection of respiratory and enteric pathogens, while simultaneously supporting broader objectives such as interoperability, medical decision-making, and regional health security. As part of the surveillance activities conducted during the study, both Georgian and U.S. service members were enrolled, reflecting the joint operational environment of Agile Spirit 2025. Following the successful implementation of surveillance activities during Agile Spirit 2025, WRAIR-EME is poised to expand its biosurveillance mission across the EUCOM area of responsibility. The next phase will continue to support diagnostic capacity at key military sites and during future multinational exercises. Strategic collaboration with Georgian and regional defense health systems will be deepened to promote interoperability and enhance early detection and response mechanisms. These efforts ensure that biosurveillance remains an integral part of medical readiness, supporting the Warfighter and advancing joint health security in dynamic operational environments.
