Named after the Allied Invasion of Normandy, also known as Battle of Normandy or D-Day, the warship was commissioned in Newport, Rhode Island on Dec. 9, 1989. After supporting a multitude of humanitarian and operational missions spanning Operation Deliberate Force to Operation Enduring Freedom, Normandy completes its active service after nearly 36 years.
