A North American Aerospace Defense Command F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft escorts a Russian Su-35 Flanker and Tu-95 Bear bomber through the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone over the Bering Sea on Sept. 24, 2025. NORAD aircraft including four F-16s, four KC-135 Stratotankers and an E-3 Sentry responded to positively identify and intercept the Russian aircraft. NORAD employs a layered defense network of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars and fighter aircraft to detect and track aircraft and inform appropriate actions. NORAD remains ready to employ a number of response options in defense of North America and meeting presence with presence. (U.S. Department of Defense photo)
