Continental Army Maj. Gen. (Baron) Friedrich von Steuben is depicted in a painting (date and artist unknown). Von Steuben, a former Prussian captain, was appointed in 1778 by Gen. George Washington as the Continental Army's fourth Inspector General, and is widely regarded as the first effective Army Inspector general. Von Steuben instituted an intense training program for officers and NCOs, including tactics, drill, and discipline; his efforts helped professionalize the Continental Army and pave the way for eventual victory over the British in the Revolutionary War.
