The 39th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric M. Smith, speaks with U.S. Navy Sailors while visiting the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Sept. 17, 2025. Gen. Smith visited to receive updates on the project status for Landing Helicopter Assault Ship 8 (LHA-8) and LHA-9. Amphibious assault ships operate apart of Amphibious Ready Groups and Marine Expeditionary Units providing a wide range of capabilities for combatant commanders.
