The 39th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric M. Smith, tours the Bougainville, Landing Helicopter Assault Ship 8, while visiting the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Sept. 17, 2025. Gen. Smith visited to receive updates on the project status for LHA-8 and LHA-9. Amphibious assault ships operate apart of Amphibious Ready Groups and Marine Expeditionary Units providing a wide range of capabilities for combatant commanders.
