Dr. John Byrd, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency scientific analysis director, briefs about the program for the recovery, identification and reconciliation after the Maui wildfire during the fourth Scientific Summit at the University of Milan, Milan, Italy, Sept. 20, 2025. The event was co-hosted by DPAA and University of Milan’s Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology. The event sought to share developments in DNA analysis techniques while creating a space to network, share ideas, and discuss new ways to improve current identification methods. The summit included information about ongoing recoveries, identification processes and advancements, partnerships and innovations, and any significant developments regarding specific cases of missing service members.
