Brunson, commander of United Nations Command, U.S. Forces Korea and Combined Forces Command (center) at the location where Moon had tea with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in 2018. Former first lady Kim Jung-sook is standing. The former first couple visited the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone on Sept. 19, the first such visit by a former South Korean president. The visit coincided with the seventh anniversary of the Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Reunification of the Korean Peninsula, issued following Moon’s 2018 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. For UNC, the visit provided an opportunity to update Moon on developments since his presidency, highlight its contributions to risk reduction and confidence building through Armistice implementation, and discuss future prospects for the Korean Peninsula.
