Former South Korea President visits DMZ to commemorate diplomacy with North Korea
Former Republic of Korea President Moon Jae-in visited the Joint Security Area in the Korean Demilitarized Zone Sept. 19, the first visit to the JSA by a former ROK president.
He was hosted by Gen. Xavier T. Brunson, commander United Nations Command, U.S. Forces Korea and Combined Forces Command, and staff from the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission which maintains the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement.
“I was honored to host former President Moon Jae-in at the JSA, a site that reflects both the legacy of the Armistice and UNC’s ongoing role in supporting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” said Gen. Brunson.
The delegation was briefed on UNC’s sustained peacebuilding efforts since his 2019 visit and its enduring commitment to peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Moon was accompanied by former first lady Kim Jung-sook, former members of his cabinet, and Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon.
The visit came on the seventh anniversary of the Pyongyang summit in which the former ROK president traveled to the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The former ROK president inspected places of personal significance such as Peace House where he sat across a table from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and the Blue Bridge where the pair strolled side by side and had tea.
For UNC, the visit presented an opportunity to provide former President Moon an update on developments since his presidency, UNC's contributions to risk reduction and confidence building through Armistice implementation, and future prospects for the Korean Peninsula.
