U.S. Soldiers assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Task Force Iron, prepare their M1A2 Abrams tank for Iron Defender-25 at the Orzysz Training Area in Orzysz, Poland, Sept. 17, 2025. Iron Defender was a component of the Eastern Shield initiative, established in 2024 to reinforce Poland’s and NATO’s defenses on the eastern flank. The purpose of Iron Defender-25 is to prove the Polish Armed Forces and their NATO allies’ readiness and capability to conduct defensive operations in a multi-domain environment.
