In memory of the 343 firefighters and 72 police officers who died in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11, Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II, Commanding General (Interim) for the D.C. National Guard; MAJ Robert Schapiro, Secretary of the General Staff (SGS) within the Office of the Commanding General; Senior Airmen Vladimir Gomez-Ruiz, vehicle maintenance specialist within the 113th Wing DCANG Logistics Readiness Squadron’s (LRS) Vehicle Maintenance Flight, joined members of the U.S. Park Police to climb 110 stories of the Washington Monument for a 9/11 commemoration stair climb. MAJ Schapiro is a 4th generation volunteer firefighter-paramedic. He and his father and his grandfather were all volunteering on 9/11. The turnout gear he was wearing was his original firefighter turnout gear. The SCBA on his back is a steel bottle from the 9/11-era.
