Ensign Mahinalani Vongsy was commissioned in 2023 at the University of Hawaiʻi (UH) at Mānoa Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), the nation’s newest program that keeps racking up milestones: it graduated the first three Marines this past May, it increased the number of enrolled cadets by more than 400%, and the program’s first graduate, Vongsy, is training to become a surface warfare officer (SWO) aboard the USS Shiloh (CG 67) where she stands in the bridge on May 20, 2025. The bridge is the control room where officers navigate and operate the ship, scan safety systems like radar and sonar, and oversee communications and other key tasks. The panel in the bridge features a hornet, the mascot of the USS Shiloh, which is derived from a key event during the Civil War's Battle of Shiloh. The "Hornet's Nest" was a recessed road where Union troops successfully resisted Confederate Soldiers long enough for reinforcements to advance and ensure a victory. This pivotal moment in the battle inspired the ship's mascot that remains on display to inspire Sailors today. (U.S. Navy photo by Melvin J. Gonzalvo)
