U.S. Air Force Capt. Stepan Volnychev, an F-15 weapons system operator assigned to the 494th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, uses a combat survivor evader locator system to communicate with the combat search and rescue team during exercise Blue Phoenix in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, Aug. 7, 2025. Volnychev played the role of an isolated personnel who was stranded in the desert and needed to be rescued by U.S. Air Force pararescuemen. Exercise Blue Phoenix focuses on navigating the complex environment of personnel recovery, combat search and rescue, landing zone security and emergency medical care.
