A vertical line array (VLA) is deployed from the research vessel F.G. Walton Smith during the 2013 Target Reverberation Experiment or TREX April 22, 2013, conducted off the coast of Panama City, Fla. The multi-national experiment includes scientists from Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division, to include (from left to right) Jessica Haig, Arianna Johns, Pam Scott, Dave Ensberg, Dennis Ilias, Clint Iles and Jeff Skinner who conduct the vertical line array deployments along with, in view, the sub-surface package with batteries and electronics (suspended), the sub-surface torpedo float, and the surface communications buoy. The vertical line array was developed at the University California Sand Diego (UCSD) Marine Physical Laboratory and consists of 32 hydrophones in a vertical line, a sub-sea recording package with batteries and recording electronics, and a surface buoy that provides communication with the research ship. The VLA can record from the 32 hydrophones continuously for eight days. Radio communication with the ship provides for command and status information as well as the remote transfer of recorded acoustic data files. Courtesy photo.
