A female alligator guards her nest in the Everglades National Park that protects 1.5 million acres of wetland, forest, and marine habitats and the native plants and animals that call it home. It was established in 1947 as the first national park created for its biodiversity. Everglades National Park protects the southern twenty percent of the original Everglades in Florida. The park is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States and the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River.
