Aircrew and loadmasters from the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron prepare a WC-130J Super Hercules for departure at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, Aug. 13, 2025. The aircraft and crew were heading to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, to gather data on Tropical Storm Erin, which is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane. Known as the Hurricane Hunters, the 53rd WRS is the only operational unit in the world to routinely fly weather reconnaissance missions, providing critical data to the National Hurricane Center for storms in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and central Pacific Ocean.
