A WC-130J Super Hercules aircraft from the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron departs Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, Aug. 13, 2025, en route to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, to collect data on Tropical Storm Erin, which is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane. The 53rd WRS, known as the Hurricane Hunters, is the only operational unit in the world to routinely fly weather reconnaissance missions, providing critical data to the National Hurricane Center for storms in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and central Pacific Ocean.
