250731-N-EN156-1021 PACIFIC OCEAN (July 31, 2025) - Lt. Thomas Hackett, an MH-60 Jayhawk pilot assigned to U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego, holds the enlisted submarine warfare insignia pinned on the mannequin used during a simulated hoist and medical evacuation exercise, July 31, 2025. In 1923, then Capt. Ernest King proposed that the Navy create a warfare insignia device for qualified submariners. The insignia came to be known as “dolphins” or “fish,” and is one of the Navy’s oldest warfare devices. The hard-earned badge distinguishes and identifies the members of the submarine community and has since become a source of pride for the “silent service.” (U.S. Navy photo by Lt. Zachary Anderson)
