A Service Member demonstrates a handheld device for electrically stimulating the vagus nerve, which has been shown to reduce fatigue and improve alertness and focus for up to several hours. Researchers at the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory’s Warfighter Performance Group are evaluating devices like this as part of a research program called operator state monitoring, which seeks to develop ways of reliably monitoring aviators’ cognitive functions to better predict and mitigate fatigue, cognitive overload, and distraction.
