Alpha Battery, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Field Artillery Brigade began the first night of night fire with illumination rounds at Fort Chaffee, Ark., June 19, 2025.
The illumination allows for the forward observers at observation point 8 to direct the high explosive rounds fired by Bravo battery on to their targets.
The night fire will continue throughout the weekend with a cess fire at midnight each night.
“This is my favorite round because we can fire them off then come out and watch them,” said Staff Sgt. Melvin Dutton, paladin crew chief, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Field Artillery Brigade. “It’s kinda like fireworks without the crazy explosions. It’s almost the 4th of July.”
