U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Trey Nelson, 30th Security Forces Squadron military working dog handler, and MWD Ringo, pose for a photo at Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., July 11, 2025. Military working dogs and their handlers work hand-in-paw to patrol, detect drugs and explosives, and perform specialized mission functions for the Department of Defense and other government agencies.
After receiving specialized training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, the dogs get assigned to various installations around the globe. Once they arrive, they will begin preliminary examinations with the host unit before beginning work with a handler.
MWDs and their handlers then work with each other every day to build rapport and always maintain lethality and readiness. (U.S. Space Force photo by Senior Airman Ryan Quijas)
