Air Force Lt. Col. Dave Almand conducts preflight checks in the cockpit of a C-17 Globemaster III at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, Aug. 8. The first C-17 arrived there in June, and the unit will be operational with four of the heavy cargo jets in September. Placing the capabilities of the C-17 in Alaska will mean war support and humanitarian aid anywhere in the world a day quicker than was previously possible. Photo by Fred W. Baker III
