NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO (Jun. 13, 2025) - Family members of Robert Dean Stethem, the namesake of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG 63), stand for the parading of the colors during a memorial ceremony for the 40th anniversary of Stethem's death. The ship is named after Steelworker 2nd Class Robert Dean Stethem, a diver who was assigned to Underwater Construction Team One (UCT 1) when he was killed by terrorist hijackers on TWA Flight 847 on his way home from an overseas assignment. USS Stethem continuously honors his sacrifice, adopting the motto “Steadfast and Courageous” to highlight the exceptional heroism he demonstrated in June of 1985.
