An American flag snaps in the light wind during a Memorial Day observance at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) in California on May 22.
Eric Bach, a department chief logistician at NSWC PHD, attended the ceremony and said Memorial Day holds personal significance to him as a day to honor Capt. Jacob Weibe of the U.S. Marine Corps. Weibe and Bach were roommates as midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. They graduated together in 1993, and Weibe went on to become a pilot in the Marines.
Weibe died in a training exercise in 2001, age 32, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, with full military honors.
Bach never forgot his friend. From 2015 to 2023, Bach served at the Pentagon, adjacent to the cemetery. Each Memorial Day, he honored Weibe with a run from the Pentagon to Weibe’s grave. On the Naval Academy’s online memorial page for Weibe, a photo shows Bach at Weibe’s grave in 2016 wearing a T-shirt with the motto “Run to Honor.”
“It’s very personal,” Bach said. “There’s the saying that freedom isn’t free. The defense of our nation is built on the sacrifices by so many that came before us.” (U.S. Navy photo by Dana Rene White)
