Brandy Baird (center), administrative technical specialist at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) in California, places her hand over her heart during colors at the command’s flagpole on May 22. NSWC PHD held a Memorial Day observance following colors that morning.
The first nationwide Memorial Day observance occurred in May 1868, when it was known as Decoration Day. Over the years, different states observed the day in various forms. In 1971, Congress standardized the name to Memorial Day and declared it the country’s official day to honor those fallen in the line of duty, to be held annually on the last Monday in May.
