Illumina Infinium MethylationEPIC v2.0 BeadChips are used in a Medical Readiness Systems Biology lab at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland, July 22, 2024. The Infinium MethylationEPIC v2.0 BeadChips enable profiling of over 935,000 methylation sites quantitatively, in biologically significant regions of the human methylome. DNA methylation is a critical epigenetic mechanism that modifies DNA without altering its sequence, thereby regulating gene expression. Traumatic experiences can alter DNA methylation patterns, leading to changes in gene expression that may contribute to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. Quantifying CpG DNA methylation levels across the genome are essential to gaining a full understanding of health, disease, and treatment opportunities. Through studying this and other issues, the Medical Readiness Systems Biology branch aims to provide solutions, inform medical interventions, and develop products to improve Warfighter health, performance, resilience, and readiness.
