A biological science technician holds a PAXgene RNA Tube containing Whole Blood in a Medical Readiness Systems Biology lab at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, in Silver Spring, Maryland, July 22, 2024. The PAXgene RNA Tube allows for the storage and transportation of blood, as well as the stabilization of intracellular RNA, which rapidly degrades within hours of blood collection. When Whole Blood is collected in PAXgene RNA Tubes, intracellular RNA can be stabilized for up to three days at room temperature, or five days at 2-8 degrees Celsius. Through the use of this and other cutting-edge equipment, the Medical Readiness Systems Biology branch aims to provide solutions, inform medical interventions, and develop products to improve Warfighter health, performance, resilience, and readiness.
