YOKOHAMA, Japan (May 21, 2025) - Sailors from Commander, Fleet Activites Yokosuka (CFAY) and Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logisitcs Center Yokosuka (NAVSUP FLCY) visit Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery in Yokohama, Japan May 21, 2025. Founded in 1854 where one of Commodore Matthew C. Perry's Sailors was first buried, the five acre site is the final resting place for more than 4,200 people including many U.S., British, and French servicemembers. The cemetery sits across the street from where the Naval Hospital of the U.S.A. once stood. The Government of Japan loaned the land to the U.S. Navy in 1871 and it remained in their hands until 1923 when the Naval hospital collapsed during the Great Kanto Earthquake. Today, the area is home to the Kanagawa Prefectural Meteorological Observatory, America Yama Park, Bluff 99 Garden and several other parks overlooking Yokohama's Motomachi District.
