Maj. Gen. John Cushing, commanding general of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, escorts Janet Monti, mother of Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti, toward the entrance of the Jared C. Monti Soldier and Squad Research Facility for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, April 7, 2025, at Natick Soldier Systems Center, Massachusetts. Monti deployed with 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI) to Afghanistan, where he was killed in action on June 21, 2006, while attempting to rescue a wounded Soldier under heavy enemy fire.
