Japan’s Izumo-class multi-functional destroyer JS Kaga (DDH-184) passes under the Coronado Bridge before docking at Naval Station San Diego on the morning of Nov. 8. The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force ship’s visit came after three weeks of F-35B Lightning II trials off Southern California. Test pilots from the United States and the United Kingdom flew the F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL), testing Kaga’s recent modifications and preparing the ship for fixed-wing flight operations.
