Marine veteran Sgt. Gabriel Martinez, 24-year-old native of Golden, Colo., performs dynamic warm-up exercises during track practice for the 2013 Marine Corps Trials at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Feb. 28, 2013. While attached to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Martinez lost one leg above the knee and the other below the knee in an improvised explosive device blast in Afghanistan on Thanksgiving Day in 2010. He has since gained proficiency with his prosthetic running blades and plans to compete in the pentathlon at the Trials, which includes track and field, swimming, cycling, archery and shooting. The Trials is an opportunity for wounded Marines, veterans and allies to compete in wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, track and field, swimming, archery and shooting. The top 50 athletes will go on to compete against wounded warriors from the other branches of military service at the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., in May.
