U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District, volunteers planted nearly 9,000 native pollinator wildflowers and grasses at the W.P. Franklin Recreation Area during Pollinator Week in late June 2024, in the second phase of plantings to reforest an 8.5-acre open field as part of the Engineering with Nature Program.
Sunshine Mimosa is Pictured here, also known as powderpuff, and according to the Florida Wildflower Foundation, it is mat-forming perennial wildflower. Not only are the pink and purple blooms delightful to see, but when you run your fingers against the leaves, they close as a defensive mechanism. (USACE photo by Brigida I. Sanchez).
