240605-N-AT887-1095 PHILLIPINE SEA (June 5, 2024) Chief Machinist’s Mate Robert Shepherd, from Crestwood, Illinois, pays homage to casualties by dropping a collar insignia into the sea during a ceremony commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Midway in the hangar bay of the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), in the Philippine Sea, June 5. The Battle of Midway was the turning point of World War II in the Pacific theater, which lasted from June 4-7, 1942, where U.S. naval forces defeated a larger Japanese force in large part due to the U.S. breaking Japanese naval code. Ronald Reagan, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5, provides a combat-ready force that protects and defends the United States, and supports alliances, partnerships and collective maritime interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
