Col. Jeffrey Palazzini, district commander, and Bil Homka, city manager of Unalaska, signed the project partnership agreement for the Dutch Harbor Navigation Improvements on Mar. 29, 2024.
Currently, a bar shallower than the surrounding seabed at the entrance of Iliuliuk Bay limits access to Dutch Harbor. This depth prevents deeper draft vessels from safely passing over the bar, and mariners must take extra precautionary measures to safely traverse the area.
This important dredging operation will provide a 600-by-600 foot channel at a depth of 58 feet in Dutch Harbor, providing vessels with improved navigation safety and efficiency.
Work is anticipated to begin in July 2024 and be completed by December 2024.
