U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Ocean Division Commander Brig. Gen. Kirk Gibbs visited Maui, Hawaiʻi, Thanksgiving week to inspect progress on the Hawaiʻi Wildfires federal response. Gibbs traveled to Lahaina, Nov. 22, 2023, and checked on the progress of the debris removal mission Lahaina. Here, Gibbs and Rock Island District Commander Col. Jesse Curry, who is also the Recovery Field Office Commander, are briefed by an arborist who is part of a team working in the burn zone to determine if damaged trees can be salvaged. USACE is a part of the combined federal, state, and local response to the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires that swept through Kula and Lahaina, Maui, Hawaiʻi.
