Know Your Defender - Chief Warrant Officer 2 Chaen McBean

Meet U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Chaen McBean, an AH-64 Apache helicopter pilot assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. McBean, from Palmer, Arkansas, is currently participating in Swift Response 23, the first of three exercises that make up Defender 23.

“I really love to fly,” said McBean, who is serving as the pilot in command for the battalion’s Bravo Company. “It’s always been a passion of mine, and with the Army I get to fly all the time.”

McBean joins his fellow U.S. Army Soldiers within the 12th CAB, an element composed of varying aircraft to include the AH-64 Apache and the HH-60M Blackhawk, to work alongside their Dutch and Greek counterparts in Greece to build interoperability amongst units during this exercise.

“It’s a beautiful country,” said McBean. “Hopefully we’ll get a chance to visit some of the beaches in Volos before we leave. I’d love to fly to a place like this after I retire.”

DEFENDER 23 is a U.S. Army Europe and Africa led exercise focused on the strategic deployment of continental United States-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stocks, and interoperability with Allies and partners. Taking place from 22 April to 23 June, DEFENDER 23 demonstrates USAREUR-AF’s ability to aggregate U.S.-based combat power quickly in Eastern Europe, increase lethality of the NATO Alliance through long-distance fires, build unit readiness in a complex joint, multi-national environment, and leverage host nation capabilities to increase USAREUR-AF’s operational reach. DEFENDER 23 includes more than 7,000 U.S. and 17,000 multi-national service members from more than 20 nations who will participate including, but not limited to: Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.
