Know Your Defender - Command Sgt. Maj. Olantewaju Anibaba

Meet U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Olantewaju Anibaba, assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade. Originally from Nigeria, Anibaba is currently serving as the command sergeant major for the 173rd BSB in Vicenza, Italy.

Anibaba joins his U.S. Army Soldiers in Greece as they participate in Swift Response 23, the first of three exercises that make up Defender 23.

“My favorite part of this training is hanging out with the Soldiers and building morale,” said Anibaba. “Training and teaching the next generation is important; I like to be available and approachable, so I can share.”

While he enjoys working alongside his Dutch and Greek counterparts to build interoperability amongst units, he admits he is glad to see his Soldiers doing well during this exercise and hopes to help them to continue their success in future endeavors.

“My Soldiers are like my real family at times,” said Anibaba. “As I watch them be successful, I hope I can continue to help them achieve their goals both in the force and out.”

DEFENDER 23 is a U.S. Army Europe and Africa led exercise focused on the strategic deployment of continental United States-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stocks, and interoperability with Allies and partners. Taking place from 22 April to 23 June, DEFENDER 23 demonstrates USAREUR-AF’s ability to aggregate U.S.-based combat power quickly in Eastern Europe, increase lethality of the NATO Alliance through long-distance fires, build unit readiness in a complex joint, multi-national environment, and leverage host nation capabilities to increase USAREUR-AF’s operational reach. DEFENDER 23 includes more than 7,000 U.S. and 17,000 multi-national service members from more than 20 nations who will participate including, but not limited to: Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.
