Marine Corps Master Sgt. Floyde Rhoades reads the Marine Corps commandant's message while celebrating the 237th birthday of the United States Marine Corps on the beaches of Tarawa, the site of a major American offensive in the central Pacific during World War II. The team is deployed to the island searching for remains or evidence of the more than 500 Americans lost during the Battle of Tarawa. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command conducts global search, recovery and laboratory operations to identify unaccounted-for Americans from past conflicts in order to support the Department of Defense's personnel accounting efforts.
