    Marine Corps Sgt. Daniel Burgess, explosive ordnance disposal technician, screens excavated dirt collected during Phase Two Testing on the island of Betio, Republic of Kiribati. The team is deployed to the island searching for remains or evidence of the more than 500 Americans lost during the Battle of Tarawa. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command conducts global search, recovery and laboratory operations to identify unaccounted-for Americans from past conflicts in order to support the Department of Defense's personnel accounting efforts.
