Master Sgt. Michael Smith, Noncommissioned Officer In Charge of the 122nd Fighter Wing Honor Guard, is given the 2022 Base Honor Guard of the Year award at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis, Indiana, May 5, 2023. Smith directed 42 funerals to include coordination between the Honor Guard and local funeral home personnel – including the funeral honors for U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, and fallen officer and former Guardsman Donald Kidd. Smith also oversaw four nationally televised colors details honoring military heritage and enhancing national pride. Additionally, Smith’s leadership enables his team to support retirements, promotions, and change of command ceremonies each drill.
