CENTAM Guardian 2023 held a joint capabilities demonstration at the Guatemalan Army Mariscal Zabala base, “Fuerzas de Tierra” park, in Guatemala City as part of the culmination of the three week training exercise.
Maj. Gen. Jonathan M. Stubbs, the adjutant general of the Arkansas National Guard, and dignitaries from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and the United States looked on as the security forces from each of the nations worked together and combined their individual assets to perform a complicated series of maneuvers meant to test their ability to collaborate and cooperate in responding to a mutual threat.
The Guatemalan Army also demonstrated the abilities of their fire and rescue teams, the Humanitarian Aid and Rescue Battalion.
Guatemala’s high vulnerability to natural disasters and its rugged and rural terrain is sited as the battalion’s necessity to maintain and advance their capabilities through training and strengthening ties with its neighbor states and the United States.
“It was inspiring to see the interoperability between the Guatemalans, Hondurans, El Salvadorans and the United States. We have an opportunity through partnership to build our own readiness. When our Soldiers come down here, they benefit from it in respect of leadership development, professional development, and at the collective level. I believe any person or any unit we send down here will be better for it,” said Maj. Gen. Jonathan M. Stubbs, the adjutant general of the Arkansas National Guard.
