Illinois National Guard to Celebrate 300th Birthday on May 6 in Springfield

Civil War living historian 1st Sgt. Duane Carrell of Springfield, Illinois, loads his rifle as the second rank fires as part of a 114th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment demonstration. The floppy hat Carrell is wearing was not standard Army issue but many Civil War Soldiers either bought such hats or brought them from home because they were better at blocking the sun and keeping rain off of your face than the Union Army-issued hats.
The Illinois State Military Museum, which preserves and educates the public on the history of the Illinois National Guard, held its Civil War Encampment with the 114th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on April 22 at the museum in Springfield. The Illinois National Guard turns 300-years-old on May 9. On that date in 1723 the first muster of colonial militia in the Illinois territory occurred in the small village of Kaskaskia in what was then under the French. On May 6, the Illinois National Guard will celebrate its history with multiple events in Illinois' capitol city of Springfield.
