Project manager of the Sea-Based X-band Radar 1 (SBX-1), Bob Dees, center, discusses the purpose of the SBX-1 to local media during a media tour, hosted by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) on Ford Island at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, March 2, 2023. Members of local media were given the opportunity to tour the SBX-1, known to the locals as the giant “golf ball”. After a record 662 days at sea, the SBX-1 is undergoing regular maintenance and system upgrades. The MDA says it’s the world’s largest, most powerful mobile radar of its kind.
