Corporal Gabriel S. Guzman, a reconnaissance man serving with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, shakes hands after being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal here, Oct. 22, 2012. Guzman, a 20-year-old native of Riverside, Calif., received the award for helping victims of a vehicle accident on June 8, 2012. Two vehicles wrecked in a head-on collision in front of Guzman and his fellow Marines who were travelling south on Alabama Highway 165. Immediately, the serve members pulled over and administered first aid to the victims. One woman was trapped in a crushed car and bleeding. Three Marines pried the door open and stopped the bleeding using t-shirts and makeshift tourniquets. After treating the victims, Guzman directed traffic until paramedics arrived.
