Yuumi Yoshikawa, the parliamentary vice-minister of foreign affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, gives remarks during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Sabånan Fadang Burial Site on Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz, Guam, on Jan. 25, 2023. During the ceremony, U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Stephen E. Liszewski, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations Pacific, presented the memorial to Honorable Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, Guam governor, to symbolize the transfer of the memorial to the people of Guam. While MCB Camp Blaz will continue to care of the site, the memorial will be available for future public access. The Sabånan Fadang Burial Site is comprised of seven grave sites that were preserved in place and is comprised of multiple individuals from the Latte Period to the very early Post-Contact Period. The burial site also includes a reinterment crypt for fragmentary remains discovered in the area during construction, which are assessed to be part of the ancient CHamoru village of Sabånan Fadang.
